How to Unclog a Drain Without Calling a Plumber

Let’s be honest—there’s nothing more frustrating than standing ankle-deep in water during a shower or watching your kitchen sink fill up when you just want to do the dishes. The good news? Most clogged drains can be fixed without calling in the pros. Here’s how you can tackle the problem, with a few stories and friendly advice from the East & Gray team.

Step 1: The Classic Boiling Water Trick

This is the easiest place to start, and you’d be surprised how often it works. Boil a kettle (or two) of water and slowly pour it down the drain in stages, giving it a minute between pours. Sometimes, that’s all you need to melt away soap scum or loosen up greasy build-up.

Story time: One of our customers, Dave, tried this after his bathroom sink started draining slow. He was skeptical, but after two kettles, the water started flowing again. Simple, safe, and worth a shot!

Step 2: Grab the Plunger

If boiling water doesn’t do the trick, it’s time to reach for the humble plunger. Make sure there’s enough water in the sink or tub to cover the plunger’s head, then give it a few strong pumps. You’ll usually hear a satisfying gurgle if the clog is loosening.

Step 3: Baking Soda & Vinegar Magic

Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain (a wet cloth works), and let the fizzy reaction go to work for 15–30 minutes. Flush with hot water. This old-school trick is safe for pipes and surprisingly effective on minor blockages.

Step 4: Check the Trap (for Sinks)

If you’re dealing with a kitchen or bathroom sink, sometimes the blockage is right in the U-shaped trap under the sink. Place a bucket underneath, unscrew the trap, and clear out any gunk (gloves recommended!). You might be amazed—and a little grossed out—by what you find.

Step 5: Try a Drain Snake

For tougher clogs, a basic drain snake from the hardware store can work wonders. Feed it down the drain, twist, and pull out the blockage. It’s oddly satisfying, and you don’t need any special skills to give it a go.

When to Call in the Pros

If you’ve tried all the above and your drain is still stubbornly blocked, it might be time to call East & Gray. Sometimes clogs are deep in the pipes or caused by bigger issues like tree roots or collapsed lines. Don’t worry—we’ve seen it all, and we’re always happy to help.

Pro tip: The best way to avoid future clogs? Use drain screens to catch hair and food scraps, and never pour grease down the drain.
