7 signs your boiler needs attention before it breaks down

Your boiler doesn’t complain much. It just sits there in a cupboard, quietly keeping your home warm and your water hot.

But before a boiler gives up completely, it usually drops a few hints. If you know what to look for, you can sort things early and avoid waking up to a cold house and a cold shower.

Here are seven signs your boiler needs a bit of attention.

1. It’s Making Weird Noises

Your boiler shouldn’t sound like it’s boiling a kettle or playing the drums.

If you’re hearing banging, whistling, gurgling, or any new noises, it could be:

  • Air in the system
  • Low water pressure
  • Limescale or sludge building up

These things don’t fix themselves. If the noises keep coming back, it’s worth getting someone to check it before it turns into a full breakdown.

2. Your Heating or Hot Water Is All Over the Place

Radiators only getting lukewarm? Shower going hot, then cold, then hot again?

That can be a sign of:

  • Parts inside the boiler starting to fail
  • Sludge in the pipes or radiators
  • A thermostat that’s not doing its job properly

You shouldn’t have to constantly fiddle with the controls just to feel comfortable. If you are, the boiler might be struggling.

3. The Pilot Light Won’t Stay On

If your boiler has a pilot light and it keeps going out, don’t just keep relighting it and hoping for the best.

It might mean:

  • The thermocouple is faulty
  • Seals are worn or damaged
  • There’s an issue with the gas supply

This is one for a Gas Safe engineer. A pilot light that won’t stay on is a clear “something’s wrong” signal.

If any of this sounds familiar, it’s a good time to get it checked.
Contact East and Gray and we’ll take a proper look before it turns into a breakdown.

4. You Spot Leaks or Drips

You should never see water around your boiler.

Even a small drip can lead to:

  • Damage to parts inside the boiler
  • Rust and corrosion
  • Safety issues if left too long

If you notice damp patches, drips, or a little puddle under or near the boiler, switch it off and get it looked at. Water and electrics are not a good mix.

5. It Smells Odd When It’s On

A healthy boiler doesn’t really smell of anything.

If you notice:

  • A burning or metallic smell
  • An eggy, sulphur-type smell
  • Any strange odour that only appears when the boiler is running

turn it off and get help straight away. If you think it could be gas, leave the property and follow gas safety advice. Don’t take chances with this one.

6. Your Bills Are Creeping Up

Using your heating the same as last year but the bills are noticeably higher?

That can be a sign your boiler is losing efficiency and having to work harder to do the same job.

A service can often:

  • Improve efficiency
  • Pick up small faults before they become big ones
  • Help keep your bills under control

7. Error Codes and Warning Lights Keep Popping Up

Modern boilers are pretty good at telling you when they’re not happy.

If you’re seeing:

  • Flashing lights
  • New error codes on the display

don’t just keep pressing reset and hoping it goes away. Check the manual to see what the code means, and if you’re not sure, get an engineer to take a look. Catching things early usually means a cheaper, simpler fix.

Why It’s Worth Acting Early

Boilers rarely go from “perfect” to “completely dead” overnight. There’s usually a build-up of little problems first.

Ignoring the signs can mean:

  • Bigger repair bills later
  • A higher chance of a full breakdown
  • No heating or hot water when you need it most

A regular service and dealing with issues early keeps your boiler safer, more reliable, and often cheaper to run.
